today students did a reflection on previous years in ELA. We talked about and took notes on what we all covered and learned and what we will cover this year similar. We then started a mini lesson on word roots.
students worked on assessing their reading skills at the start of the school year. Anyone that finished got in their ssr time.
Today much like in the previous days we addressed more Close and Critical practice. We read and summarized in a five sentence summary of the song "Where you Are" from Moana.
Students started by turning in, having me quick check, and then receive their Close and Critical assignment back. We then started reviewing the process of answering close and critical questions. We will further develop this on Wednesday and Friday. Students were to self assess their answers using the rubric and notes from class.
Students continued going through the syllabus and classroom expectations before being given their first reading and writing assessment in the form of a Close and Critical. In this assignment, students are to find a song of their choice to analyze and annotate the lyrics. Once they have done this they will answer four questions about the writing and their comprehension of the writing. The questions ask them to summarize, detail writer's craft and style, develop theme with evidence, and make connections. This assignment is due Monday at the start of class.
After the whirlwind that was the first day back to school, students got to know more about the people around them and the class expectations and my philosophy of teaching. I distributed the class syllabus and went over much of the classroom expectations. I have included a copy of that syllabus below.
